It has been estimated by sociologists that most adult people encounter a bully on a regular basis. It might be on the road, or at the mall or even as you’re walking down the sidewalk. Bullies are people who try to intimidate others through actions or words for whatever personal reasons they may be harboring. In most cases, these encounters with bullies are short and infrequent, and require no action other than either standing up to them as an incident is occurring or not. The real problem is when there is the situation where you have a bully in your daily existence. This is where you need to learn how to make bullies leave you alone.
There are two different kinds of bullies and they require two different approaches.
The first is the verbal bully. These bullies like to say ugly things but don’t as a rule resort to violence. Though they might try to go behind your back or say things that aren’t true to other people in your life, they generally won’t physically harm you, so you have a good chance of getting them to leave you alone.
The best approach is to either threaten physical harm yourself or have someone do it for you. Bullies are notorious cowards. If they are made to understand that further bullying will result in physical pain, they will almost without a doubt cease what they are doing to you.
Another approach is to gain some leverage by going over their head if the bully is at work or even going sideways to get some support by others that are on your side. The bottom line here is, to get a verbal bully to leave you alone; you have to go to war with them. Go all out and don’t stop till you defeat them, even if you have to enlist others to fight your battles for you.
The second kind of bully is the one that uses their physical size and/or strength to intimidate or actually harm others into kowtowing to their behavior. These kinds of bullies are obviously harder to stop, but again, it can be done; and again, the solution is to go on the offensive.
If you know someone that is even bigger and stronger and is willing to go toe-to-toe with your bully, let them have at it, even if you abhor violence. There are just some things in life that cannot be solved any other way. If this is not an option, you could always hire someone to do it for you.
These two options are unfortunately your best chances at getting a physical bully to leave you alone. If neither of these is an option for you, you can always go the legal route and apply for a restraining order, or better yet, move away if the threat is becoming too serious.
The bottom line is, the only way to stop someone who is physically bullying you is to gain some leverage over them, whether it is a physical advantage or through the use of some other force, such as blackmail. Any other efforts, such as offering cash or other rewards aren’t really achieving your goal of having them leave you alone.
To sum up, the only way to get bullies to leave you alone is to go on the offensive in such a way as to cause bullies to choose to leave you alone on their own initiative out of fear or respect.
